Ride Classification Key

  • Social Ride: 10-14 mph average (depending on route), no one is dropped, a very casual ride
  • E: Easy, up to 20 miles, average under 10 mph, not necessarily flat, but close.
  • EM: Moderately easy, up to 50 miles, average under 12 mph, some hills.
  • M: Experienced riders, average 16 mph or less, expect varied terrain with hills.
  • S: Strong riders, no limits, any terrain possible, including mountainous.

Notes:

  • GMBC tours are free and open to all.  Helmets are required.  Most of our rides rides have two leaders: one to lead and a co-leader to sweep.  Please contact the leaders for specific info. on the ride.  We encourage riders to try to carpool to starting points which are far from their homes.

Light, rolling hills with beautiful views by the lake. One of the flattest rides of the season. The shorter distance circles Grand Isle and includes some dirt. The pace will be more casual than the long ride. Riders on the longer ride can visit St. Anne's Shrine (bathrooms and picnic tables but no food) and also a fossil bed. Unlike other GMBC rides, this one splits between the short and long at the beginning.

Double Ferry South 50 mi (M/S) Taking the Burlington to Port Kent ferry to get to New York.  The hilly terrain on the New York side brings beautiful views of the lake. The second ferry will take us from Essex, N.Y. to Charlotte and we’ll return on flatter terrain back to Burlington.  Note: this is the reverse of the way the ride used to go.  Bring money for ferry tickets.

Both rides will start in South Royalton.  The shortest ride will travel north to Chelsea and return; the middle distance continues up Route 110 to the top of the hill in Washington and back; and the long ride  makes a loop through Thetford and Sharon. There are two country stores in Chelsea for food breaks.

After the ride, cyclists can camp out in South Royalton, stay at an area hotel, or return home.  There is a $10 fee for camping, part of which might be refunded.

This ride starts with the ferry to Port Kent and heads north to the recreation path through the Old Air Base into Plattsburgh. From Plattsburgh, riders will take the ferry across to Grand Isle and down to South Hero. Riders then have the option of taking the Local Motion ferry to Colchester and the Burlington Bike Path (shorter route with with packed gravel) or following the Champlain Bikeway on Routes 2 and 7 (longer ride).  Bring money for the ferries.

The ride will be followed by a picnic at Auer’s Boathouse just off the bike path.  There is room in the fridge there if folks want to bring refreshments before the ride.
